Pandora is an excellent music service bar none. When they decided to limit the service to United States only, we died a little inside. Just when we’ve almost gotten over our grief, a simple guide intervened and showed how to access Pandora’s service outside US.

In the past we’ve been through a number of non-working guides, fortunately this isn’t one of them. As this guide is being typed, our dear old friend Pandora is playing for us :)

pandora screen

Steps

1) Download and install Tor
2) Start > Tor > Torrc ; Paste the following at the bottom and save:

StrictExitNodes 1
exitnodes desync, 0xL37N1Tor, agrippator, whistlersmother, lefkada, bettyboop, croeso, TorLuwakOrg, nixnix, inap1, redpineapple, cronic, sasquatch, slowturtle2

3) Download tor.pac and place it at your C: drive
4) Configure your browser:

Internet Explorer
Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings
Check ‘Use automatic configuration script’ and fill the textbox with: file://c:\tor.pac

Firefox
Tools > Options > Advanced > Connections > Settings
Check ‘Automatic proxy configuration URL’ and fill the textbox with: file:///C:/tor.pac

5) Run Tor (Start > Tor > Tor)

There you have it; after running Tor, you are able to access Pandora’s service.

Note: It will take a few minutes for Tor to configure itself; the following message will appear once the configuration process is done:

[notice] We now have enough directory information to build circuits.

It’s a good thing that I signed up with them when they were still in beta. I listen to it all the time. :)

It pays to be on the inside when things like this come out. Half the time they are duds, a handful of the are gems though like Pandora.

This was a lifesaver, for me anyway. I was about to go crazy because I had spent about four hours trying to find a way to listen to Pandora last night. This is the only thing that worked.

    It’s awesome.

Are there any other Tor servers? Only about 4 are known, and they are never on. My Tor generally says

    failed to choose exit server
No specified exit routers seem to be running, and strict nodes is set: can’t choose an exit

  5. Cormac on August 28th, 2007 7:24 pm

I’m having the same issue as Chris, is this purely a matter of relying on one of the specified exit servers to be running? This workaround worked for me a few days ago, but hasn’t worked since.

  6. Cormac on August 28th, 2007 7:26 pm

…forgot to say, other than that, thanks a bunch for posting the guide.

  7. Cormac on August 28th, 2007 8:19 pm

Sorry for the multiple posts, but just to follow up on Chris’ question. I sorted my configuration out by going to this page :

    https://torstat.xenobite.eu/index.php?SortBy=G

Sort by CC (geo-location), then look for some exit nodes with ‘yes’ under the ‘exit’ column. I cross-checked the nodes included in the guide above, and all had ‘no’. I’m guessing this is why we were getting exit router problems.
    t
Enter some ‘yes’ nodes in your torrc config list, and you should be good to go. I’m running on d41d8cd98f00b2 at the moment, streaming perfectly again.

    Thanks a lot!

    It works for Pandora!

But, How come it does work for hulu?

  22. devnullius on March 31st, 2009 2:32 am

I’m using this solution for well over a year for a friend of mine.

Now, installing a new laptop and using Chrome, I noticed that all requests for a site were slooooow.

This is strange; above solution should ONLY use the proxy for pandora.com.

Show-my-real-IP showed me I was wrong. With above solution ALL websites go through the proxy - which, by default, is much slower.

AND I noticed another problem. I cannot control Tor/Privoxy to get a US IP-only.

Lastly, I also wanted to add hulu.com support. Above solution does not provide this support (as far as I can tell after a little hour of tweaking : )

So I went on for new solution… I think I found one, with a catch… It shows an advertisement above each page you open. You can click it away. I don’t know if AdBlock+ will block this feature… You’re on your own. If I find a solution without ads, I’ll repost.

Some short testing revealed a much faster browse expierence, a US IP and LOTS of configuration steps less.

This way you (probably) can access every US-only site, including music from www.pandora.com and tv series from www.hulu.com .

    Found the solution here: http://answers.yahoo.com/quest.....141AAfyGRc

    Solution is:
(and yes, this works for LAN too!)
(beware! Installation comes with a lot of extra “bonus” software. DO NOT INSTALL THOSE EXTRA’S! Also read earlier ads-remark!)

    Hotspot Shield (http://hotspotshield.com/)

In order to view Hulu shows outside of USA, all you need is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service. With VPN, your computer will be connected and assigned a new USA IP address.

Therefore with the new IP address, it is possible to view all Hulu shows or access any services that are limited for USA residents. Hotspot Shield is a free VPN service software.

Hotspot Shield helps secure your computer, your anonymity and your online communications when using wi-fi. (download Hotspot Shield now)

    System Compatibility for Hotspot Shield:
    Windows Vista
    Windows XP
    Windows 2000
    Mac OS X (10.5 Leopard)
    Mac OS X (10.4 Tiger)

    How to run Hotspot Shield

After you installed Hotspot Shield on your computer, a small red shield was placed in the bottom right corner of your icon bar (or on the top menu bar for Macs). Click on the red shield and choose ‘Connect’ from the menu. A browser window will open and begin to connect to the internet securely. Once the shield turns green, it is safe to browse the internet.

    Peace!

  23. devnullius on March 31st, 2009 7:44 pm

    (even more updates… Post 3 I believe?:)

There is NO solution for HotSpot Shield’s pop-ups! : (

ALL you can do is strip the contents IN the advertisements. This is the case for Internet Explorer 8, Chrome 1, Chrome 2 & Firefox 3 (which I installed for the occasion) with their adblock (plus) options and filters.

I think this is due to the fact that Hotspot Shield-process starts the pop-up banner. Your adblock software will detect the advertisements itself and strip the contents, but screen space still is lost by the now empty add :(

So I went on for a better solution. And on… :)

    I found this: UltraSurf (v9.4). It’s great :>>
See this page for more info by others and me: http://www.mahalo.com/answers/.....ide-the-us .

    Peace!

I’m in Europe, and as far as I’m concerned spotify trumps pandora. None of this “artist specific” crap and “create a station” - just type in the track and listen to it, make playlists and so on… it’s easier than pirating it, and infinately more legal.

Good suggestion for those who can’t get either though :-)

  27. Aurelia on October 4th, 2009 4:11 pm

Hello Can anyone help for step by step guidlines for MAc users pls?

  28. John on October 24th, 2009 2:59 am

Tor is so god awful slow. I bought a VPN from www.hidemynet.com for 5$/month. Everything working out well, I can watch hulu and listen to pandora.

** Please note that you will need to enable plugins at TORBUTTON (lower right, in the browser mentioned in above post) in order to allow flashplayers e.g: Pandora! **
