well, it’s been quite awhile since I last blogged due to various commitments and lack of materials. Time passes, people change, people blog. Having gone through many versions and styles of blog, I hope that this one will stick, no promises though! So without further ado, I bring you the first post…

Rejoice citizens of Sparta Malaysia, your day has come. Moons ago, often we lamented, “Will we never be free of these wretched chains that binds us to the blasted landlocked television channels?”. These pleas were hear and IPTV was brought by means of worldip.tv(http://worldip.tv). The Star reported today, I quote:

The IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) service is being offered by Broadway Digital Media (BDM) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of music company Broadway Entertainment (M) Sdn Bhd.

Local channels available are TV3, ntv7, 8TV and TV9 while the foreign channels are Indonesia’s Metro TV and China’s Dragon TV.

The service is free until June, after which BDM would charge local customers RM10 a month while overseas subscribers will have to pay US$5 (RM17), BDM chairman Aziz Bakar said.

“With this service, you’ll never have to rush home to catch Bulletin Utama (or any other favourite TV show). You have the next 24 hours to watch it on our service,” he added.

I heart 8TV & NTV7
I heart 8TV & NTV7

Now, I may not rush home to catch the latest adrenaline rushing edition of Bulletin Utama or Edisi Siasat but the prospect of watching NTV7 and 8TV over the Internet is rather sweet. Keen observers have noticed the wise decision of omitting the ancient RTM1 and RTM2 that have (according to some well crafted sources) surpassed the dinosaurs. No one knows how it survived the Ice Age, but you can be damn sure that providing quality entertainment wasn’t it.

Back on track, the move of bringing NTV7 and 8TV is very much appreciated by me. Though I no longer indulge in daily dosages of tellies, NTV7 and 8TV still has a warm place in my heart, next to the right ventricle. College students without TV sets will be overjoyed with the chance to once again keep up with their Spanish dramas and such. I for one missed a great many episodes of CSIs while living away from home and it tormented me every week of my life.

I ran a few tests and the results were satisfactory. You need to go through the free registration to have access to the goods. Also, you are probably only able to access it via Internet Explorer due to the embedded Windows Media Player controls. Sorry Firefox, IE 1 - FF 0.

Currently it supports the following channels:

  • Malaysia Infotainment TV: Compilation of TV3, NTV7, 8TV & TV9 programs.
  • Malaysia News TV: Compilation of TV3, NTV7, 8TV and TV9 news.
  • Metro TV: Indonesian No 1. News TV Station. Includes News & Magazine program.
  • Dragon TV: China Satellite TV Station. Includes News and Magazine program.
  • Asian MV: Music Videos.
  • English MV: Music Videos.
  • MetroTV LIVE: TV Station from Indonesia.
  • TV3 LIVE
  • NTV7 LIVE
  • 8TV LIVE

Besides that, a few radio stations are also accessible but who cares about that stuff anyway. The Video-On-Demand (VOD) feature however took me by surprise, it was like you got a free sundae with your Beef burger. Several pre-recorded TV shows were available, notably Thursday Nite Live, Project Superstar and So U Think U Can Dance (with capital U’s), none of which I watch but a lot of people do I suppose.

But I Thought U Could Dance?

The VOD and live TV channel (8TV) was tested and each was unnaturally smooth and for most part, *gasp* … lag-free. Seriously, the live episode of Desperate Housewives on IPTV looks exactly like it was on TV, just slightly more ugly, the actresses I mean. Same goes for the VOD episode of So U Think U Can Dance (with capital U’s). At full screen, each lagged slightly and were pixelated but still of bearable quality. Advertisements are as shown on TV but you can skip it by dragging the progress bar.

That’s all for my review of worldip.tv IPTV service. Spread the word to as many unfortunate souls as you can, cause’ it will no longer be free come June. As a fellow stingy Malaysian I can attest that by then, a lot of you will not continue using the service :P
